Oregon Mineral Watercolor Paint

In this full day workshop we will discuss foraging for local mineral pigments and learn how to turn them into handmade watercolor paint. Using mortars and pestles we will grind soft rocks and soils into artist pigment. We’ll discuss how to forage ethically and how to process pigment safely. In the afternoon participants will make watercolor paint from scratch by mulling these Oregon pigments on a glass slab. Each person will leave the class with their own set of hand mulled mineral pigment watercolor paints.

No previous experience necessary.

Carolyn is an artist and teacher. She has a BA in Fine Art. After completing her BA she studied textiles at Oregon School of Art and Craft. Her years of volunteer work with a local forest defense group gave her a strong connection to the ecosystems of Oregon. She continues to experiment in the studio with botanical and mineral color, foraged from neighborhood walks and trips to nearby forests and rivers. She teaches classes at Wildcraft Studio School, Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, and other locations on making mineral watercolors, botanical inks, lake pigments and natural pigment crayons. She also runs a business called Strata Ink selling her handmade art supplies.

All supplies provided.
